Oskar Schindler
Oskar was born April 28, 1908 in Moravia, Austria-Hungary and died October 9, 1974. Oskar attended a school called Sudetenland. His father was a factory owner and his mother was a homemaker. Oskar had a close relationship with his sister Elfriede. Later he became an Industrialist in Poland during the German occupation, and married Emilie Schindler, and parents Hans Schindler, Franziska Luser. Oskar’s religious belief was Catholic.Schindler was a profitable man. His motive to succeed was money but it later became keeping the Jewish people safe. The Natzi SS elite officers had a great amount of respect for Schindler.
Oscar was strolling out of his house when it started raining. But it was not raining water droplets nor was it snowing. He saw where the material was coming from so he drove over there and witnessed the most horrific sight of his life. His workers and innocent jews being killed at the Kraków Ghetto. This event changed Oskar’s outlook on life. Oskar began asking the Natzis if he could have more Jews working in his factory he ended up saving 1200 lives.
This began in 1944, Oskar Schindler’s factory was closing down. All the jews in his camp would would suddenly be sent to Auschwitz. Oskar approached an SS officer by the name of Goeth about moving his workers and factory to Czechoslovakia to continue to supply Hitlers army with supplies. Obviously, Schindler primarily did this to keep the jews safe.
On May 8, 1945 the war had finally ended. Oskar gathered all of his workers to tell them the splendid news. Fearing capture Schindler and his wife fled to the east to avoid the Romans. Several days later, Schindler and his wife received news that the twelve hundred Schindler Jews (Schindlerjuden) were freed.
Oskars’ wife Emilie had a huge part in keeping the jews safe. She secretly helped wash their clothes and give them food. She put the Jewish people before herself. Eventually Oskar and Emilie got a divorce because they were unhappy. People will always remember what amazing people they were together.
Near the end of the war, Oskar had spent nearly all of his money on black market produce for his workers. He moved to Argentina in 1948, where he eventually went broke. Schindler returned to Germany in 1958. Oskar died on October 9, 1974 from heart and liver problems. He was a good hearted man that will be remembered. One of his most famous quotes are “If you saw a dog going to be crushed under a car, wouldn't you help him?”
